How to Remove Hard Water Stains From a Glass Shower Door

You scrub the shower door, it looks clean while it’s wet, and the cloudy haze is back the second it dries. That haze is hard water: minerals and soap scum that build up a little more with every shower.

Key takeaways

  • Shower haze is minerals plus soap scum, built up over time.
  • Spotless X2 removes it from glass, chrome, porcelain and tile.
  • Ventilate and wear gloves and eye protection.
  • A squeegee after every shower keeps it from coming back.

Why bathroom cleaners stop working

Soap scum alone is soft and easy to wipe. Mixed with hard water minerals, it hardens into a layered film that bonds to the glass. Many bathroom sprays handle the soap part but not the mineral part, so the glass looks clean while wet and cloudy again once it dries.

Why the haze keeps coming back

Every shower leaves water on the glass. When it dries, the minerals stay. Soap scum sticks to that mineral layer, and the two together build into the white, foggy film you can’t wipe off. Bathroom cleaners and vinegar can help with fresh scum, but they struggle with buildup that has been there for months.

What you need

  • Spotless X2
  • A microfiber applicator pad and a clean microfiber towel
  • Gloves and eye protection, and a fan or open window for ventilation
Safety first

Spotless X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. You can find every sheet on our SDS page.

Step by step

  1. Start with dry glass. Let the shower dry out first so you can see every spot.
  2. Use a quarter-sized dab of Spotless X2 on your microfiber pad.
  3. Cross-hatch the glass, up and down then side to side, one section at a time. Heavy buildup may need a second pass.
  4. Rinse and wipe. Rinse the glass well, then dry it with a clean microfiber towel.
Pro tip

Don’t forget the metal. The same minerals crust up chrome faucets, shower heads, metal fixtures, porcelain sinks and tile, and Spotless X2 works on those too.

Keep it clear

  • Squeegee after every shower. Ten seconds of squeegeeing means far less water drying on the glass.
  • Crack the door or run the fan so the glass dries faster.
  • Hit spots early. A quick pass every few weeks beats a scrubbing marathon twice a year.

Frameless vs. framed doors

On framed doors, buildup collects along the bottom track and frame edges where water sits. On frameless glass, it builds along the bottom edge and around hinges. Pay extra attention to those spots, and keep product off any painted or coated metal parts.

Common mistakes to avoid

Cleaning wet glass. Let it dry so you can see the spots.

Abrasive scrubbing pads. They can scratch glass.

No ventilation. Run the fan or open a window.

Skipping the squeegee afterward. Buildup returns fast.
