Applying a coating yourself isn’t hard, but a few mistakes can leave high spots, streaks or a finish you’re stuck with. Here’s what to avoid.
- Prep first: spots off, clay, polish, wax-free.
- Work small sections in the shade.
- Wait for the rainbow flash, then buff.
- Second layer after 5 minutes; cure 24 hours.
Why small mistakes show for years
A coating cures into a hard layer. If you leave a high spot (excess coating that wasn’t buffed off) or apply over a flaw, it cures that way. Getting it right the first time matters more than with a spray you can reapply next month.

The mistakes
What you’ll need
- HybridCoat (with suede applicator)
- Several clean microfiber towels
- Clay bar and polish for prep
- Dissolve X2 and Spotless X2
- Good lighting or a flashlight
- Nitrile gloves, eye protection, ventilation
- Skipping prep. Water spots and swirls get sealed in. Remove spots, clay and polish first.
- Leaving wax on the paint. The coating needs bare clear coat to bond to.
- Working in the sun. Hot panels flash the coating too fast. Work in the shade on cool paint.
- Doing too big an area. Work small sections, about half a hood at a time.
- Buffing too early or too late. Wait for the “rainbow” flash, about 3-4 minutes, then buff.
- Skipping the second layer. After 5 minutes, apply a second layer to catch anything you missed.
- Getting it wet too soon. Let it cure 24 hours before rain, washing or sprinklers.
HybridCoat is a highly flammable liquid: keep it away from heat, sparks and open flames, use it with good ventilation, and wear gloves and eye protection. See its Safety Data Sheet.
The right way
- Prep. Remove all water spots, dirt and wax. A clay bar and polish first is strongly recommended: you lock in the paint as it is.
- Apply. Shake well, put a few drops on the suede applicator and cross-hatch half a hood at a time.
- Flash and buff. Wait 3-4 minutes for the “rainbow” flash, then buff smooth with a clean microfiber towel.
- Layer and cure. After 5 minutes, repeat for a second layer. Let it cure 24 hours before it sees moisture.
Use good light. A flashlight held at an angle shows high spots before they cure.
Lighting and high spots
Set up good light before you start. A flashlight held at a low angle shows high spots as dark, oily-looking patches. Catch them while you’re still buffing that section; once they cure, they’re much harder to fix.
Common mistakes to avoid
Applying in direct sun. It flashes too fast.
Too much product. A few drops per section.
Not checking each section. High spots cure in.
Washing within the first day. Let it cure.
A simple care schedule
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Before | Full prep, same day if possible. |
| During | Section by section, check with a light. |
| After | 24 hours dry, then gentle washes. |
