Glass shower doors look great for about a week. Then the white haze creeps in, and no amount of bathroom spray seems to touch it. That haze is mostly minerals from your water, often mixed with soap scum, and it needs the right kind of cleaner.
- Shower door haze is usually hard water minerals plus soap scum.
- Everyday bathroom sprays handle fresh scum but often can’t remove months of mineral buildup.
- Abrasive pads and razors can scratch glass or ruin a factory glass coating.
- Drying the door after showers is the single best way to keep it clear.
What’s actually on the glass
Every shower leaves a film of water on the door. When it dries, the minerals stay behind. Soap and body products stick to that layer, and the two build up together into a cloudy coat that gets harder to remove every month.
Before
AfterYour options, honestly
| Option | Works on | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Vinegar or vinegar + dish soap | Fresh scum and light spots | Slow on heavy buildup; strong smell; needs repeated soaking |
| Everyday bathroom spray | Weekly upkeep | Usually not strong enough for old mineral layers |
| Calcium/lime/rust removers | Mineral buildup | Read the label for glass, metal and stone; rinse well |
| Glass hard water remover (Spotless X2) | Mineral buildup and haze on glass, chrome, porcelain and tile | Strong acid: gloves, eye protection, ventilation |
| Melamine sponges, scouring pads, razors | Not recommended on glass | Can scratch glass and remove factory coatings |
Don’t mix acid-based cleaners (including vinegar and water spot removers) with bleach or other cleaners. Mixing can release dangerous gases. Rinse the surface between products and keep the bathroom ventilated.
How to remove hard water stains from a shower door
What you’ll need
- Spotless X2
- Microfiber applicator pad or non-scratch sponge
- Two clean microfiber towels (one damp)
- Squeegee
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
Spotless X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
- Start with a dry door. Open the window or turn on the fan. Rinse off loose soap first and let the glass dry.
- Use a quarter-sized dab of Spotless X2 on a microfiber pad. Work one section at a time.
- Cross-hatch it over the haze, up and down then side to side. Heavy buildup may need a second pass.
- Rinse and dry. Wipe with a damp towel or rinse with the shower, then squeegee and buff dry.
- Do the frame and fixtures the same way if they’re chrome or metal. Keep it off natural stone like marble.
Hard-to-reach bottom corners are where buildup is thickest. Do them last, when you know how much pressure and product the rest of the door needed.
Keep it clear afterward
- Squeegee after every shower. Thirty seconds, and most minerals never get the chance to dry.
- Leave the door open or run the fan so the glass dries fast.
- Spot-treat monthly before a new layer builds up.
- Protect the glass. A water-repellent layer helps water bead and run off. Read our shower glass guide for the full routine.

Common mistakes to avoid
Scrubbing with a scouring pad. It can leave fine scratches that trap even more buildup.
Mixing cleaners. Acid cleaners and bleach should never meet.
Using acid cleaners on natural stone. Marble and travertine can be damaged by acids.
Skipping the squeegee. Buildup comes back fast without it.
A simple care schedule
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| After every shower | Squeegee the glass. |
| Weekly | Quick wipe with a gentle bathroom cleaner. |
| Monthly | Spot-treat any haze with Spotless X2. |
| Every few months | Re-protect the glass. |
Frequently asked questions
What removes hard water stains from shower doors?
An acid-based hard water remover made for glass, like Spotless X2, dissolves the mineral layer that everyday sprays can’t. Vinegar can help on light, fresh buildup.
Is Spotless X2 safe on shower glass?
Yes. It’s made for glass, chrome, metal, porcelain and tile. Keep it off natural stone, wear gloves and eye protection, and ventilate the room.
Can I use a magic eraser on a glass shower door?
Melamine sponges are mildly abrasive and can dull glass or remove a factory glass coating. We don’t recommend them on shower glass.
Why does my shower door get cloudy so fast?
Hard water leaves minerals every time the glass dries, and soap scum sticks to them. Squeegeeing after showers stops most of it.
What if the glass is still cloudy after cleaning?
Old buildup can etch glass over time. If haze remains after a proper clean, the glass may be etched, which cleaners can’t fix.
