The thin lines on your rear window are the defroster. They’re printed on the inside of the glass, and a razor or rough scrub can break them.
- The defroster lines are printed on the inside of the rear glass.
- No razors or scrapers on the inside.
- Wipe along the lines, not across them.
- Water spots are on the outside, so clean those normally.
How defroster lines get damaged
The thin lines on the rear window are a printed heating grid. They warm up to clear frost and fog. Because they sit on the inside surface, anything sharp or abrasive dragged across them can break a line, and a broken line leaves a strip of glass that won’t clear.
Many rear windows also carry radio antenna lines in the same area, so the same care applies.

Inside the rear window
- Never use razors, scrapers or abrasive pads on the inside.
- Wipe along the lines (side to side), not across them.
- Use a soft microfiber and a gentle glass cleaner.
Outside the rear window
The outside is plain glass, and it’s where water spots build up. Clean it like any other window:
Spotless X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
What you’ll need
- Spotless X2 (outside)
- Microfiber applicator pad
- Soft microfiber towels
- Gentle glass cleaner (inside)
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
- Work on cool, dry glass in the shade. Start clean so you can see every spot.
- Use a quarter-sized dab of Spotless X2 on a microfiber applicator pad. A little covers a big area.
- Cross-hatch it over the spots, up and down then side to side. Heavy buildup may need a second pass.
- Wipe with a damp towel, then buff dry with a clean microfiber.
If you have a rear wiper, clean its blade too. A gritty blade on fresh glass streaks it right away.
Cleaning the outside
The outside of the rear window is regular glass, and it’s where rain and sprinkler spots build up, especially on SUVs and hatchbacks where the back glass catches road spray. Clean it with Spotless X2 the same way you do the windshield, and dry it fully after washing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Scraping the inside. It can break the defroster lines.
Wiping across the lines. Wipe along them.
Stickers on the lines. Peeling them can damage the grid.
Ignoring the rear wiper blade. A gritty blade streaks clean glass.
A simple care schedule
