Chrome is supposed to shine. Hard water spots turn it dull and blotchy, and polishing alone often doesn’t touch them.
- Chrome shows every mineral spot because it’s so reflective.
- Spotless X2 works on chrome trim and metal accents.
- Apply to the pad, not the car, near paint and plastic.
- Use Dissolve X2 for chrome wheels.
Why chrome dulls so quickly
Chrome trim sits at the edges of the car, around windows, grilles and bumpers, where water runs off and collects. When those drops dry, the minerals sit on a mirror-like surface that shows every one of them.
Over time, layers of spots make chrome look gray and blotchy, even though the chrome underneath is still fine.

What’s on your chrome
The same minerals that spot glass dry onto chrome trim, bumpers, grilles and badges. Because chrome is so reflective, even light spotting is easy to see.
How to clean it
Spotless X2 works on chrome and metal accents as well as glass.
Spotless X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.
What you’ll need
- Spotless X2
- Small microfiber applicator pad
- Microfiber towels
- Painter’s tape (optional, to protect nearby paint)
- Nitrile gloves
- Eye protection
- Work on cool, dry glass in the shade. Start clean so you can see every spot.
- Use a quarter-sized dab of Spotless X2 on a microfiber applicator pad. A little covers a big area.
- Cross-hatch it over the spots, up and down then side to side. Heavy buildup may need a second pass.
- Wipe with a damp towel, then buff dry with a clean microfiber.
Chrome trim often sits right next to paint and plastic. Apply to the pad, not straight onto the car, and wipe any product off nearby paint right away. For spots on paint, use Dissolve X2 instead.
On wheels
For chrome or painted wheels with water spots and brake grime, Dissolve X2 is the one to use.
Real chrome vs. chrome-look trim
Many modern cars use plastic trim with a chrome-look finish instead of real chrome. That finish can be thinner and more delicate. If you’re not sure what your trim is, work gently, use a small amount of product, and test a hidden spot first.
Common mistakes to avoid
Spraying or pouring onto the car. Apply to the pad near paint and plastic.
Using metal polish on chrome-look plastic. It can wear through the finish.
Leaving product on nearby paint. Wipe it off right away.
Buffing with a gritty towel. Chrome scratches easily.
