How to Clean Water Spots Off a Sunroof

A sunroof faces straight up, so every rain shower and sprinkler run lands on it and dries in full sun. It’s often the most spotted glass on the car.

Key takeaways

  • Sunroofs face straight up, so they catch every drop and every hour of sun.
  • Clean them closed, cool and in the shade.
  • Keep product off rubber seals and roof paint.
  • Protect the glass afterwards so water runs off.

Why sunroofs spot faster than other glass

Vertical windows shed water. A sunroof doesn’t: water sits flat on it until it evaporates, often in direct sun. That combination of standing water and heat is exactly what turns light spots into baked-on buildup.

Sunroofs are also easy to forget. You don’t see the top of the car from the driver’s seat, so buildup has months to grow before anyone notices.

Before you start

  • Close the sunroof fully.
  • Park in the shade and let the glass cool.
  • Wash and dry the roof first so you’re not grinding dirt around.

Clean the glass

Safety first

Spotless X2 is a strong acid cleaner: its Safety Data Sheet lists it as causing severe skin burns and eye damage. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep it off your skin, and read the label before you start. Every sheet is on our SDS page.

What you’ll need

  • Spotless X2
  • Microfiber applicator pad
  • Microfiber towels
  • Step stool for taller vehicles
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Eye protection
  1. Work on cool, dry glass in the shade. Start clean so you can see every spot.
  2. Use a quarter-sized dab of Spotless X2 on a microfiber applicator pad. A little covers a big area.
  3. Cross-hatch it over the spots, up and down then side to side. Heavy buildup may need a second pass.
  4. Wipe with a damp towel, then buff dry with a clean microfiber.
Pro tip

Keep product off the rubber seals and painted roof. Work toward the middle of the glass and wipe edges with a damp towel right away.

Keep it clear

After cleaning, a coat of SFX1 helps water bead up and roll off the glass instead of sitting there and drying.

Don’t forget the drains

Most sunroofs have drain channels around the frame that carry water away. If they clog with leaves or dirt, water can back up. While you’re cleaning the glass, open the roof and check that the channels are clear; your owner’s manual shows where the drains are.

Common mistakes to avoid

Cleaning it hot. Let the glass cool in the shade first.

Getting product on the seals. Work toward the middle of the glass.

Opening it while wet. Water can run into the tracks.

Skipping protection. Flat glass benefits most from water beading off.

A simple care schedule

When What to do
Every wash Dry the roof glass first, it heats up fastest.
Monthly Check for buildup and clear the drain channels.
Every few months Spotless X2, then SFX1.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my sunroof always so spotted?

It faces straight up, so it catches every rain and sprinkler, and it sits in direct sun that bakes the spots on.

Should the sunroof be open or closed?

Closed, and cool. Clean it in the shade after washing the roof.

Will it harm the rubber seals?

Keep product on the glass and away from the seals and paint, and wipe the edges with a damp towel right away.

Can I clean the sunroof from inside?

Yes, with a soft microfiber and gentle glass cleaner. Water spots are on the outside.

Will SFX1 help a sunroof?

Yes. It works on glass and helps water bead and roll off instead of sitting there.
